Even at Your Darkest by A.J. Love

Review by Sasha Kane Thatcher is the man that you don’t need in your life, but the type that once you see him you won’t be able to stop thinking about. He’s every bad cliché in the book and exactly the type of guy that you mother warns you to stay away from. The tragedies in his past have caused him to reserve himself from the world around him and to refuse to let others in. Content to live out the rest of his life wallowing in his own misery, Kane doesn’t think much of his attractive new neighbor. That is, only until he found himself wanting to get closer to her; a type of closeness that he hasn’t felt in a while. Layton Parks is the equivalent of a human doormat. Simply going along with the plan that her mother has laid out for her seemed like the best option for he. Until a type of divine intervention, in the shape of a forgotten friend, steered her life in a completely different direction. Suddenly, Layton finds herself cut off from her family, dropping out of school and taking two jobs to keep her head above water. Throw in a new hot and brooding neighbor and suddenly Layton’s life is about to become a bit more interesting. The emotion in this story brings the reader to new depths with the characters. They are dealing with real problems that many young adults face at times in their life, if not to the extremes that Layton and Kane do. They were real characters that had accurate flaws about themselves. Their growth throughout the story created a different edge to the typical clichés that are embedded into this story – enemies turned lovers, pretty uptown girl and dark city boy – so that their chemistry comes to life in the splendid way that emphasizes the need to have one person in your life that will be a bright light in the darkness. Overall, I thought that this book was a nice contrast to the typical romance novels. The characters were great and the character development showed a different aspect that a relationship might take. It’s a story that definitely takes a darker turn and is not for the light of heart, but will draw you in none the less. **ARC provided for an honest review**
